Oops….I think I should have put my question/comments here….I’ll try it..
Sorry…ignore this one or the one on the chat…
Hi Wayne and Stephanie!
I am having a bit of a challenge with the severity of Cain’s actions – so much intentional blame is put on him. I agree the land has a voice, that it was defiled and that Adonai had to respond legally due to the circumstances – just wanted to present some possibilities.
As a result of the fall, the satan gained legal rights due to Adam and Eve’s actions yes? He will always accuse man and woman with the Hope of bringing them down so that we will not have the inheritance and blessings God created us for “In His image” to rule and reign with Him.
We explored some different view points with the Rabbis during sandbox calls…we spent quite a bit of time with Cain and Able – The older sages writings – while they may have been more Kabbalah minded in interpretation – saw Cain and Able’s interactions more kindly – not sure that is the best word….
Great point by the way about the “bloods” being plural and the inheritance of Able’s family line also being killed. The idea though, that Cain bludgeoned Able multiple times because he did not know which injuries would cause death —— I am not so sure. That doesn’t feel right.
Besides sacrifices to Adonai, I am not sure they “knew” what death in murder was. Brothers often are rough with each other, sometimes envious, mean, goading.
Why did Able go out to the field of his brother? Was it to say, how sorry he felt that Cain’s offering was not accepted, or that he spoke to God on Cain’s behalf? Was it to encouraged Cain for the hard and good work he did on the land? If so the outcome may have been different.
Do you suppose Able could have been a bit full of him self – prideful? Perhaps saying to his brother (as they likely did other times in childhood rivalries) – look how much better I am then you…or God loves me more. Siblings do that all the time – mom loves me more then you – na,na,na…
Shlomo Carlebach sang a song speaking of this – in the late 60’s I think. It was so emotional and powerful (I am sure you know how he could draw people from all religions and show them love and perspective). He sang of Cain hitting able and Able falling to the ground. He called for him to open his eyes and get up. He kept calling “open your eyes”. Then he laid on the ground with Able in his blood. He was crying and pleading with his brother to open his eyes. He lay there beside him like this for 3 days. Their was sorrow and anguish, He wept when he understood what he had done. I thought it was pretty interesting that Shlomo sang about him lying there for 3 days – where did that come from I wonder…
I know (and so did Cain) that he did something terribly wrong – but was it all that intentional? The sages have an argument that it is not as black and white as it appears. Especially as our American texts portray.
So God had to act as he did. There were legal consequences. He was able to bless – or as you said give Mercy to Cain. Did God feel sadness for Cain, and for the land, how was this feel different then sadness of Abel’s death – if it was.
This set into motion a curse on the land that would not be resolved for thousands of years. The earth – His creation – is still healing through and with the blood of Jesus. This all reminded me of CS Lewis’ story of Aslan who had to comply with the white witch after a betrayal – it was the law she said – but Aslan knew of an “older magic” something the white witch did not know.
Anyway, I have an empathy and different understanding of Cain after listening and discussing this in Sandbox. Maybe I missed something – you have been studying Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic in this context a lot.
Just thought I would share….as I mentioned, the part about multiple stab wounds – made me feel something yucky. What do you think he bludgeoned him with…I thought it was a stone. Did they have plowshares back then with blades? Hard to imagine that long ago. Sorry…a bit of a rabbit hole.
Thanks for these lessons…I am needing them.
